Lawn Aeration
Aeration involves removing ‘plugs’ of soil in your lawn in order to reduce soil compaction and help air and nutrients move more freely. Aeration can also increase water absorption in the soil, making your irrigation system more efficient!
Aeration in Calgary is most effective when performed in either the spring or fall. Before aeration is completed, all sprinkler heads should be flagged to avoid damage. If you are unaware of sprinkler head locations please feel free to reach out and we will assist you.
Benefits of Aeration:
Allows root zone to grow deeper and stronger, making your lawn more drought resistant during watering restriction periods.
Relieves soil compaction that is common in Calgarys high-clay content soil which improves water, air, and nutrient intake rates in the soil.
Thatch builds up over time and reduces soil intake rates. Aeration reduces thatch content in the soil.
Aeration can improve seed germination.
Aeration can reduce the number of insects and diseases in your lawn.
Aeration FAQs

Aeration is most effective when performed in either the spring or fall, when the grass is not green yet. It is recommended to water the lawn two days before aeration so the soil is easily penetrable and plugs can easily fall out of tines.
-
Most properties in Calgary require aeration once per year in the spring. Additionally, for commercial sites or heavily trafficked areas an additional aeration can be done in the fall.
-
Leaving the aeration plugs on top of the lawn after aeration promotes nutrient breakdown in the soil. If you would like the plugs removed we can remove them for an additional fee. Plugs can also be broken down faster by frequent watering and increased lawn mower use.

Aeration is typically a straight-forward process that does not require the homeowner to be home. Just make sure we can access the backyard and any other gated areas!
